Now, we’ve only been up to Manchester a handful of times, but it seems like quite a pleasant place. I mean, apart from that time I almost got chased by knife-wielding youths through the Arndale shopping centre, but we’ll overlook that bit. But back to its good bits: it’s got some museums. A few parks. A huge wheel. Even a big Cathedral. What’s there not to like?
This immigrant hates Manchester.
To be fair, we found it pretty hilarious when we read that an ‘illegal’ immigrant currently living in Manchester has asked to be sent back to Iran. Yep, that country bordered by Afghanistan and Iraq. The country where life expectancy is less than 70 years old. The country where capital punishment is still legal. (Although it does have one of the only condom factories in the Middle East, so it’s got that going for it at least.)
OK, granted it’s not really that bad. In fact it’s actually quite beautiful. And home to many amazing things. But the Iranian immigrant in question, Arash Aria, aged 25, wants to leave Manchester because of the ‘rudeness and violence’ in the city. He walked into a police station in central Manchester, declared he had been living in the UK illegally for ten years, and demanded to be sent back to the city of Shiraz where he still has family. However, his plan backfired, because the police checked his status with the home office – and he’s actually in the UK completely legally.

Aria told reporters, “The people of Manchester have not been welcoming. It’s words, violence… many things. I try to ignore people but I’m fed up now. I don’t get the respect I should here.” Poor guy. We just want to give him a big hug.
While some people took to Twitter with the inevitable racist replies, these tweets scooped our ‘best tweets of the day’ trophies.
Chin up, Arash. We’re sure things will get better soon.
